Resolved to make sewing more than a hobby, he sent his sketches to Pierre Cardin on his 18th birthday. After being discovered by the French designer, Jean-Paul Gaultier launched his own brand in 1976. His futuristic style, hinting at a world of fantasy and adventure revolutionized fashion.
From 1984 on, his designs freed male couture of what Gaultier perceived to be a “forced virility”. Gaultier’s best-selling men’s look was white and navy blue striped jerseys and tight-fitting white shirts; the cone-shaped corset would be his most memorable design for women.
Later on, the so-called “child progeny” of fashion expanded his business to include out to new products such as perfumes, fur and costumes.
