Originating from the South Mediterranean, Turkish slippers were designed so that people would be able to remove their shoes quickly and easily before walking on carpets. In Arabic and Muslim countries, the slippers are worn for all occasions. Although widely considered an indoor shoe, like bedroom slipper, the style also serves as an outdoor shoe. Young people from Northern Africa area wear the slippers as ceremonial dress for occasions.
In the past, the ambassadors of the Arab world traditionally offered the shoes to their Western visitors at consular meetings.
Although Turkish slippers are principally worn in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey, they slowly appearing more frequently in Europe. For Spring/Summer 2007, Jonak sold Turkish slippers in fine leather and in velour. The shoe label Erlach also has made Turkish slippers have developed their designs to include winter versions of the shoe that are completely covered.
