A pea coat is a winter coat that is waterproof and warm. It has a large collar and the side pockets usually have flaps. The coats are normally black or blue and have double buttons.

The Bedouins from Northern Africa were the first to wear the pea coats. The first European explorers then brought the coats back to Europe. Since then, pea coats were worn by the national Marines.

In 1962, the couturier Yves Saint Laurent presented the pea coat at his first runway show. It was the first time that work clothing had ever been worn on the catwalk. The pea coat quickly became popular within catholic and conservative circles, and was no longer just a coat fro marines.

It wasn’t until Winter 2007-2008 that the pea coat began to transcend social classes and ranking. Designers and stylists began to develop the traditional pea coat into their own styles. Comptoir de Cottoniers released a black belted pea coat, Freeman T. Porter a sportswear pea coat in denim, and Burberry introduced a shorter coat with an upturned collar. Gerard Darel also designed a women’s pea coat with light flutes sleeves.
