Vests were originally worn by ship workers to keep cool in the sun. However it was Hollywood that made the classic white wife beater a popular trend. American actor Marlon Brando wore the top in the film a Streetcar Named Desire, and Robert DeNiro sported one in Raging Bull.
Ready-to-wear lines took on the sleeveless top in 1973. Since then, the undershirt has become a classic of men’s and women’s fashion. All common labels form American Apparel and Zara to Jules and Celio sell sleeveless tops in a palette of colours.
Over the seasons, the classic vest style has lost its simplicity. Today, sleeveless tops have replaced it. In 2008, Vanessa Bruno introduced her elegant cashmere and silk vest, elegantly pleated at the bust and straps. Yves Saint Laurent took the classic style and added patterns to it with his black sleeveless top featuring a white flowered pattern. Maje went for thin straps, decorating its top with cotton lace.
