Diadème

A tiara is a headwear accessory. Before, a tiara was a sign of royalty while today it can be worn by anyone from little girls to women.

Tiaras were first created as a sign of royalty. French jewellery empire Chaumet designed headwear jewellery for French imperials. Napoleon notably made his sisters and sisters-in-law wear Chaumet’s diamond tiaras. In 1853, jeweller Lemonnier created a tiara decorated with thin pearls and diamonds for Empress Eugenie. In 1908, Maria Pavlovna, the German Duchess called on Cartier to make her a spectacular sapphire and diamond tiara.

In the twentieth century, tiaras were no longer worn just by royals and rich heiresses. Today, little girls wear tiaras to dress up as princesses, and some women wear tiaras for special occasions like their wedding or birthday. Famous jeweller Swarovski offers a range of tiaras including the Azhara model, decorated with rhodium and crystal. Famous jeweller Jean-Marc Garel specialises in jewelled tiaras and has created them for Miss France competitions.
